REAL-ID, REAL-ID DATE, REAL TRAVEL

REAL ID – REAL ID DATE. We love having fun, romance and adventure, but now and again to maintain that Wild Side in us all, we have to talk about business in Travel, so bear with us and bare with us! Time travels fast, and five years ago the Feds announced all travelers over 18 years old would require REAL IDs. IN JUST LESS THAN A YEAR NOW — this regulation is likely to take effect.

At Wild Side Destinations and Destination Weddings.Travel we take pride in a 100% passenger to plane ratio! Saying, “When your plane lifts off, make sure you’re watching from a window seat on the plane, not from the tarmac below.” We mean that more than ever. REAL GETAWAY, REAL VACATION, REAL WEDDING = REAL ID. Beware of any travel planner omitting this detail upfront.

Passed in 2005, the 9/11 Commission recommended the REAL ID Act to “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses” required before allowing people to board a commercial airplane. The Act establishes minimum security standards for driver’s licenses used as ID and prohibits certain federal agencies—incl: Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)—from accepting IDs that don’t meet Act’s security standards. Delayed three times over the past 5 years, REAL ID will likely take effect May 7, 2025.

Beginning on that date, a driver’s license will only be acceptable to pass through the TSA inspection for heading to your gate at the airport IF it has a REAL ID seal.

REAL ID – Many travelers will need new, compliant driver’s license to fly domestically, but there are many other forms of ID that are also acceptable, incl:
. US passport book or card
. enhanced driver’s license, available in Michigan, Minnesota, NY, Vermont, Washington
. US trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
. US Department of Defense ID, incl: IDs issued to dependents
. permanent resident card
. border crossing card
. acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized, Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe
. HSPD-12 PIV card
. foreign government-issued passport
. Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian Northern Affairs Canada card
. transportation worker identification credentials
. US Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
. US Merchant Mariner Credential
. Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

Driver’s licenses are issued by states, each with their own requirements for REAL ID. So not only does TSA maintain different habits at each airport, REAL IDs can be 50 shades of glimmer. TSA DHS requires a minimum proof of your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, and 2 proofs of address of your principal residence.

Examples: Oregon REAL ID has a star inside a black circle in the upper right corner, Washington REAL ID has an American flag on the card, a pink banner at the top of the card with the words “Enhanced Driver’s License”. Montana, Massachusetts and Florida’s REAL ID has a gold circle and yellow star in the center, right top corner.  Maine’s REAL ID is a gold outline of the state with white star in the center. Hawaii’s REAL ID has a star in a gold circle in the upper right-hand corner, next to the outline of the Hawaiian Islands. And the beat goes on.

NOTE: these forms of ID will get you on a plane, they cannot get you travel across any border, including Canada or Mexico. For more details on REAL ID, go to REAL ID FAQs | Homeland Security (dhs.gov)
